“We may be small, but we are mighty!”: SB 634 Signed Into Law

On February 15, MSP President Diane Blau shared the news that SB 634 had been signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder.  About this legislative accomplishment, Dr. Blau wrote, “It reflects the strong support and active engagement that came from the MSP community. I am most appreciative of all of the efforts expended on behalf of this legislation in the interest of current and future alumni.”

MSP was a strong advocate for the passage of SB 634 (now Public Act 24). 

Public Act 24 Timeline:

January 2017 – Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) informed individuals with a Temporary Limited License (TLLPthat ​extensions would no longer be granted.​  

July 2017 – MSP, in cooperation with other concerned schools, ​met and ​began conversations with LARA that resulted in a further 4​ month extension of the TLLP deadline​ to December 31, 2017. 

This group also proposed a legislative solution that has now resulted in the introduction of Bill 634 ​by ​State Senator Wayne Schmidt.

October 26, 2017 – President Blau reaches out to MSP Community to contact State Senators in support of SB 634. 

November 8, 2017 – SB 634 is approved by the Senate Health Policy Committee and passed the State Senate by a vote of 37-0. 

November 10, 2017 – President Blau updates community and asks that we contact our State Representatives.

December 11, 2017 – LARA issues a final extension of 90 days for TLLP License holders whose license was set to expire on December 31, 2017.  The new expiration date was March 31, 2018.

January 17, 2018 – MSP Vice President Diane Zalapi testifies before House Health Policy Committee in support of SB 634.

January 25, 2018 – SB 634 passes in State House.  The Bill is returned to State Senate for final approval. 

Jan 31, 2018 – SB 634 passes in final vote in State Senate.

Feb 7, 2018 – SB 634 is presented to Governor Rick Snyder.

Feb 14, 2018 – SB 634 is signed by Governor Snyder.

Feb 15, 2018 – SB 634, now Public Act 24, goes into law with immediate effect.
