Summer and Fall 2017 Research & Presentations

Research is an essential part of academic life at MSP.  The diverse clinical interests of our faculty and students create numerous opportunities for research collaborations and contributions.  We asked faculty and students to share research news from June 1, 2017 to the end of first semester.

Lee Bach, PhD (Core Faculty) presented “An Experiential Approach to Teaching Key Concepts and Methods in Qualitative Research” on December 13, 2017 at the Qualitative Pluralism Conference at Middlesex University in London. 

Fran Brown, PsyD (Program Director) presented “A Qualitative Heuristic Study: The Parentified Psychotherapist’s Experience of the Psychotherapeutic Process” on December 13, 2017 at the Qualitative Pluralism Conference at Middlesex University in London.  Dr. Brown’s poster won an award for excellence.

Shannon Chávez-Korell, PsyD (Core Faculty) presented a poster entitled “Resilience, Perceived Stigma, Social Support, and Self-Esteem in Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth” with her co-authors (Weinhardt, L. S., Stevens, P., John, S. A., Apchemengich, I., Kioko, D., Cochran, K. M., Watjen, J. M., Lambrou, N. H., & Muro, N. J.) on November 6, 2017, at the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting & Expo in Atlanta, GA.

In October 2017, she published “Transgender and gender non-conforming youth’s public facilities use and psychological well-being: A mixed-method study” in Transgender Health with co-authors Weinhardt, L. S., Stevens, P., John, S. A., Apchemengich, I., Kioko, D., Cochran, K. M., Watjen, J. M., Lambrou, N. H., & Muro, N. J.

In August 2017, Dr. Chávez-Korrell presented two posters at the 125th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association (APA) in Washington, D.C.  First, with co-authors Newell, M., Cochran, K. M., Pierson, H. C., Watjen, J., Salas, S., Muro, N., & Callahan, K., she presented “Examining school related stress, mental health, coping, and self-efficacy among high school students.”  With co-authors Newell, M., Muro, N., Zwolski, S., Tindall, C., Pierson, H. C., Watjen, J., Salas, S., Ipekci, B., Mascari, L., Navarro, O., Brumm-Larson, J., Truscott, N. L., & Jennings, I., she also presented “Breaking the relationship between poverty and associated risks: Role of coping and social support.”

Jessie Dluzynski, PsyD (Instructional Assistant) received a National Psychologist Trainee Register Credentialing Scholarship presented by National Register of Health Service Psychologists.  On November 8, 2007 she presented “Animal-Assisted Interventions” to a class at Oakland Community College.  And, Dr. Dluzynski presented a poster entitled “Information Processing and Attention” at the 3rd Annual Psi Chi Research Symposium on June 16, 2017.

Adam Duberstein (PsyD 2) attended the APA Annual Conference in August 2017.  He presented “Activating Psychologists: Advocacy in Science, Education and Practice” on August 3 with co-presenters Patrick J. DeLeon, Joanna Sells, Sarah R. B. Milam, and Laura Dryjanska.  Adam also presented a poster entitled “Moving Toward Social Justice: Insights for Research, Policy and Practice.”

Dustin Shepler, PhD (Core Faculty), Kevin Johnson (PsyD 4), and Alicia Width (PsyD 3) published Risky Sexual Behavior and Knowledge of HIV/AIDS Transmission in a Community Sample: Sexual Orientation, Race, and Gender in the Walden University Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences in August 2017. 

Dr. Shepler also co-authored Predictors of Sexual Satisfaction for Partnered Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults in the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity published by APA Division 44 with Jared Smendik (PsyD 2), Kate Cusick (PsyD 3), and David Tucker (PsyD 4).
