PsyD Program Goals, Objectives & Competencies

Goal 1: To provide students with a comprehensive knowledge base in the scientific foundations of psychology and prepare them to utilize this knowledge as practitioner-scholars

Objective 1A: To provide students with knowledge of historical foundations of psychology

  • Competency 1A.1:  Students demonstrate knowledge of historical foundations of psychology

Objective 1B: To provide students with knowledge in the scientific foundations of professional psychology

  • Competency 1B.1: Students demonstrate knowledge of biological bases of behavior
  • Competency 1B.2: Students demonstrate knowledge of cognitive and affective bases of behavior
  • Competency 1B.3: Students demonstrate knowledge in the science of psychological measurement
  • Competency 1B.4: Students demonstrate an understanding of statistical methods used in quantitative research
  • Competency 1B.5: Students demonstrate a foundation for understanding qualitative and quantitative research methodology
  • Competency 1B.6: Students demonstrate knowledge in the social aspects of behavior

Objective 1C: To provide students with knowledge of human development across the lifespan

Objective 1D: To provide students with an understanding of humanistic psychology and its integration with contemporary theories and practice

  • Competency 1D.1: Students demonstrate knowledge of humanistic principles in the development of identity
  • Competency 1D.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of humanistic and contemporary approaches to intervention, health and well-being

Goal 2: To prepare students to become competent clinicians who integrate contemporary theories and research findings with practice and are proficient in evidence-based assessment, diagnosis, intervention and outcome evaluation

Objective 2A: To provide students with knowledge and experience in relationship skills required for competent clinical practice

  • Competency 2A.1: Students demonstrate the ability to form a therapeutic alliance

Objective 2B:  To provide students with knowledge and skills in assessment, diagnosis and evaluation

  • Competency 2B.1: Students demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical and empirical foundations of test construction, evaluate psychometric properties of testing instruments, and apply them as appropriate for specific assessment contexts
  • Competency 2B.2: Students demonstrate skills in administering, scoring and interpreting tests pertaining to the assessment of personality, intelligence, achievement, testing and neuropsychological screening
  • Competency 2B.3: Students demonstrate knowledge and skills in assessment and diagnosis into the case conceptualization and treatment planning process
  • Competency 2B.4: Students demonstrate knowledge of contemporary models of diagnostic categories and dimensions and ability to formulate diagnoses to aid in case conceptualization

Objective 2C:  To foster students’ ability to critically evaluate and apply clinical interventions

  • Competency 2C.1: Students demonstrate the ability to formulate case conceptualizations and treatment plans
  • Competency 2C.2: Students demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate and apply clinical interventions
  • Competency 2C.3:  Students demonstrate understanding of clinical issues with couples and families

Objective 2D:  To foster students’ ability to integrate psychological theories in professional practice

Objective 2E:  To provide students with knowledge and skills in supervision and consultation

  • Competency 2E.1: Students apply knowledge of effective supervision and consultation practices. 

Objective 2F:  To prepare students for practice as licensed professional psychologists

  • Competency 2F.1: Graduates are prepared for practice as psychologists
  • Competency 2F.2: Graduates obtain licensure

Goal 3: To foster students’ understanding of psychological research and how it informs clinical practice

Objective 3A: To provide students with an understanding of research methods and the application of research literature

  • Competency 3A.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the review and integration of a body of literature
  • Competency 3A.2: Students critically analyze the integrity of research designs and implementation
  • Competency 3A.3: Students demonstrate the ability to critically analyze the impact of research on clinical issues
  • Competency 3A.4: Students demonstrate the ability to integrate and extend the literature in the form of an individual research project

Objective 3B:  To provide students with knowledge and understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies

  • Competency 3B.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods

Objective 3C: To prepare students to conduct independent research

  • Competency 3C.1: Students conduct statistical/data analysis
  • Competency 3C.2: Students implement research designs appropriate to selected research questions

  • Competency 3C.4: Students integrate ethical considerations into their research endeavors

Objective 3D: To provide students with the knowledge to apply relevant research in clinical practice

Objective 3E: To foster student proficiency in professional writing and presentation skills

Goal 4: To provide students with an understanding and appreciation of cultural factors relevant to diversity

Objective 4A: To foster student knowledge and appreciation of perspectives and needs of diverse individuals and communities

  • Competency 4A.1: Students demonstrate knowledge of and appreciation for the views and needs of diverse individuals and communities

Objective 4B: To instill in students the importance of community service and foster the ability to work with diverse individuals and communities

Goal 5: To foster students’ knowledge of ethical and professional standards as well as attitudes necessary to become competent practitioner-scholars who value professional development and ongoing learning

Objective 5A: To foster knowledge and understanding of ethical principles applied to professional psychology

  • Competency 5A.1: Students demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with the APA Code of Ethical Principles, state and federal regulations, institutional policies

Objective 5B: To develop and maintain student self-awareness and ability to utilize self-reflection in course work and clinical training

  • Competency 5B.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the importance of self-awareness for the practitioner-scholar

Objective 5C: To foster development of student professional responsibility and professional behavior
