John Brennan, JD, PsyD

Dr. Brennan has been an Associate Faculty member at the Michigan School of Professional Psychology since 2012, having previously been an adjunct since his graduation from the program in 2011. He is also an adjunct faculty member in the graduate counseling program for Sienna Heights University and has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Oakland Community College since 2007.
Dr. Brennan is a practicing clinician at The Relationship Institute in Royal Oak where he specializes in treating couples, as well as individuals struggling in the areas of substance abuse and anger management. He previously completed his practicum at HAVEN, focusing in the area of domestic violence where he was awarded the Counseling Program’s volunteer of the year award for 2007. Dr. Brennan was also awarded the Marjorie Scott Scholarship for excellence upon his graduation in 2011. Dr. Brennan also remains licensed to practice law and is keenly in interested in forensic psychology, ethics, and the interplay between law and psychology.

Areas of Expertise/Interests
Dr. Brennan specializes in couples counseling having completed a clinical training program in Imago Relationship therapy before returning to school in 2006. He has also acquired extensive experience in the area of domestic violence after being a member of the HAVEN counseling program for three years, working with the men seeking treatment to address their history of domestic violence, as well as the women and children who survive it. Dr. Brennan completed his internship at Gateway Counseling in Madison Heights where he facilitated both domestic violence and substance abuse groups, as well as provided services to clients presenting with a wide range of psychological distress.
Dr. Brennan has previously been involved in presentations regarding the principles of Imago Relationship therapy as it applies to parenting as well as presentations focusing on Imago Relationship therapy and couples.

I believe in a collaborative teaching style which recognizes the student as an essential member of the process of learning, and honors the student involvement in all aspects of the classroom experience.
